Heritage

Like its name, from 'Vandre' (Marathi) to 'Bandora' (Portuguese) to Bandra (English) and other variants like Bandor, Bandura, Bandera, Bandara, Pandara and Bandorah, the place has undergone a metamorphosis.

Call her by any name, the Queen of the Suburbs has a unique and rich history and a true Bandraite will say with pride. "You can take a Bandraite out of Bandra but you can never take Bandra out of a Bandraite." It is this deep commitment to our suburb that propels us to preserve her heritage, often against all odds.

Bandra has 25 villages of which 22 still exist. Each village has a history and heritage of its own-and its own story to tell. With 'Heritage of Memories' - we hope to capture these long forgotten stories…, a nostalgic journey down memory lane where old timers from Bandra communities-the Parsis, Christians, Muslims, Marathas, Sindhis - will share the past with us. There will also be Heritage walks, workshops and discussions.

During Celebrate Bandra 2007 we hoped to highlight various aspects of our heritage with the hope that having created awareness our residents will see the need for preservation and we trust that our efforts have been fruitful.
